Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan will be the keynote speaker at the Women & Agriculture Conference next Thursday, 24 October, in the Radisson Hotel in Sligo.

Phelan was the first person to go public about the Cervical Check scandal and in April 2018 took to the steps of the High Court to announce the cover-up. Since then, she has been campaigning for better services for women and has been instrumental in the development of the Women’s Health Taskforce.

Often there is no fallback for that loss of income, there is no sick leave when you are farming

From the farming community of Mooncoin in Co Kilkenny, Phelan will discuss the practical and financial impact that cancer can have on a farming household.

“Often there is no fallback for that loss of income, there is no sick leave when you are farming. The health side of cancer is stressful enough, never mind adding financial pressures to the mix,” she said.

The conference will also include a panel on how rural women can benefit from the CAP, a ‘Caring for the Carer’ panel focusing on mental and physical health, how to save on health insurance and advice from Dr Eddie Murphy on building resilience.

Tickets are €65. Call 01-4199525 or book online at www.womenandagriculture.com.
