The video footage being widely circulated this week of a Department of Agriculture operation on a farm in the west of Ireland is both shocking and upsetting.
We do not know the full details of the case but questions have to be asked about the manner in which the cattle were euthanised. Surely there had to be a better way.
We know that there were issues on the farm that the courts are currently dealing with, but two wrongs don’t make a right and a full investigation and review of the circumstances around these actions needs to be completed to avoid the same thing happening on a farm again in the future.
Farmers and the Department of Agriculture need to be aware that in this era of social media, camera phones and drones, the eyes of the world are upon us at all times.
