Straw is moving around the country and indeed on boats into the country. There is no reason to import straw into Ireland at present.

There is plenty of straw in sheds, and tillage farmers need support from the wider sector.

The risk of weeds that could be imported in that straw is a threat to Irish growers and a cause of further financial worry to farmers.

We do not have herbicides to fully control blackgrass or other grass weeds, and we do not have economical methods of control.

Some farmers may innocently think the few bales of straw they buy from England or Spain are not an issue, but they could be the start of a weed problem that we do not have the means to control.
