The Irish Farmers Journal Dairylink Animal Breeding webinar is available to watch below.

Dairylink Winter Breeding for High Output per Cow.

The start of October means decision time for winter breeding and sire selection, and Jack Kennedy sat down with some of the Dairylink Ireland specialists and farmers to discuss the key principles of sire selection for autumn breeding. Dairylink farmer from Dromintee, Co Armagh, James Martin joined the panel to discuss what is important for his cows, which are milked twice a day but are still yielding on average almost 10,000l on grass silage and 3.5t of concentrate per cow per year.

During the webinar, Jack Kennedy moderated a discussion that covered the following topics:

  • Joe Patton from Teagasc discussed research insights from trials north and south.
  • Dairylink Ireland adviser Aidan Cushnahan talked about the principles of autumn sire selection.
  • Stakeholders in Dairylink Ireland are MSD Animal Health, Lakeland Dairies, Teagasc, CAFRE, AFBI and the Irish Farmers Journal.
