BETTER Farm NI participant, Ryan McDowell, will host a virtual farm walk on Tuesday 23 June, starting 8pm.

The event is open to all. However, to gain access to the online platform, viewers should register by Friday 19 June at 5pm.

Ryan farms 66 suckler cows on a 63ha grassland unit. Cow types are predominantly Angus and Hereford.

In previous years, cows were crossed back to native beef breeds with male progeny finished as steers.

For heifers, Ryan has established a good market for in-calf suckler replacements with a high number of repeat customers returning annually.

The breeding policy is slowly changing, with Ryan making greater use of continental sires through AI.

Topics covered during the virtual walk include the use of AI at grass, sire choice, selecting replacements and the performance of store cattle at grass.
