The project for the pupils at Enniskillen Royal Grammar School focuses on the sustainability of Aberdeen Angus cattle in Co Fermanagh.

The team are talking to dairy, suckler and beef farmers about how Angus genetics are used within their farming systems. Research is also being conducted into the animal health and nutrition considerations for sustainable beef production.

The calves are being kept on the farm of team member James Ritchie.

“The calves arrived 393 days ago, and they have put on an average of 396kg, so daily liveweight gain is just over 1kg/day,” he said.

“We suspect they are not too far away. They are currently averaging 527kg and we they will be ready by September,” James added.

The team have kept other pupils involved by giving regular updates on the project and the calves were brought into the school at sports day last year for a guess the weight competition.

“There are a lot of people from our school that come from Enniskillen town who wouldn’t have farming backgrounds and they have learned a lot more about agriculture,” said Thomas Kerr.

Pupils involved: Thomas Kerr, Aaron Flanagan, Anna Flanagan and James Ritchie.
