Killucan Men’s Shed in Westmeath came to life in October 2016, when Joe Bingham saw the need for a relaxed meeting point where the men of the Killucan area could enjoy the company of other like minded folk, over a cup of tea. Speaking on behalf of the shed, Joe explains that after his involvement in the establishment of the nearby Rochfortbridge Men’s Shed, he realised the positive effects that regular laughs with new and old friends could have on men, particularly those who are retired from work.

“Trying to get men in to a shed is like pulling teeth sometimes, but we have about 15 members at the moment, who come and go to the shed when they please.” With the guidance of TP O’Gorman, Killucan Men’s Shed has become part and parcel of the Westmeath parish. The men preserve a very inclusive environment, into which non-members are integrated.

“We welcome everyone and anyone here. We are situated right across from St Camillus’s nursing home. The nurses on duty sometimes bring a resident over for the day, so they can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. It takes them out of that environment and gives them a chance to chat with the lads here.”

This unique and heartwarming gesture highlights the welcoming and empathetic ethos of the shed.

On the run up to the festive season they will be selling tickets for a very special raffle, which will support the life of Killucan Men’s Shed and the North Westmeath Hospice foundation. A handmade wooden rocking horse is up for grabs, which the men have spent night and day working on. This is the main event on the shed’s calender at the minute, Joe says. The group are also kept busy making a crib for the tidy town’s Christmas season.

The positive energy that is so obvious within the group is regularly charged with music lessons and computer classes. Members also regularly visit other sheds.

Killucan Men’s Shed is glad to welcome any new members to their meetings on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. For more information on times and events call Joe on 087-9858926, or find Killucan Men’s Shed on Facebook.
