Farming forecast

Rain

Met Éireann says that rainfall totals over the coming week will be variable, with most areas expected to get above average rainfall as it turns unsettled from the middle of the week.

Temperatures

A cold snap is expected at the start of the week and farmers should keep an eye on their water troughs for ice and freezing pipes.

However, in general soil temperatures over the past seven days have been slightly above normal over much of the country.

Field conditions

Soils have reached saturation point in many areas, but a hard frost on Sunday night may improve field trafficability for a temporary period on well-drained soils.
