Monday will be dry and sunny in many areas to begin with but there will be some showers near northern and western coasts, Met Éireann has said.

Scattered showers are forecast to develop elsewhere later in the morning and some may turn heavy at times, but Met Éireann said there will be plenty of sunny spells too, particularly later in the day.

Highest temperatures on Monday will range from 11°C to 14°C in a moderate westerly breeze.

It will be dry in many areas on Monday night with long clear spells and scattered showers. Met Éireann said that showers will mainly affect western coastal counties.

Lowest temperatures on Monday night will range from 4°C to 7°C with light southwest breezes.

Tuesday

Scattered showers mixed with sunny spells are forecast on Tuesday, with showers heavy at times in Munster and Leinster.

Highest temperatures will be between 12°C and 15°C with a light or moderate westerly breeze.

A mix of dry and clear spells with scattered showers are forecast on Tuesday night. Showers will mainly affect the west and northwest, Met Éireann said, where they will likely be prolonged. Lowest temperatures of 5°C to 8°C are forecast, with light westerly winds.

Wednesday

Wednesday will begin with outbreaks of rain or drizzle in the morning, but it is forecast to be largely dry during the afternoon with sunny spells in many areas.

However, showers will continue over Ulster through the day and highest temperatures will range from 13°C to 16°C with light or moderate westerly winds.

Wednesday night will be relatively mild, with rain spreading from the southwest to most areas from early in the night, as winds strengthen, increasing strong in coastal areas.

Thursday

There is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the forecast for Thursday, Met Éireann said, with wet and windy conditions likely in most areas during the day.

The rain looks set to clear to showers later on Thursday and there will be highs of 10°C to 13°C.

Current indications suggest Friday will remain unsettled with widespread showers and a risk of some being heavy or thundery.

Farming forecast

Met Éireann has said most areas will see above average rainfall this week, with up to twice normal amounts in the south and east.

Farmers are being told to expect around 30mm generally, with up to 50mm over high ground.

There will be no big rise in temperatures this week either and it will be slightly cooler over the next week, with mean air temperatures of 9°C to 10°C. It said this is around 2°C below average for mid to late May.

There will be some drying on Monday to Wednesday as showers will be less frequent than over the weekend, but there will be scattered showers on these days too. Meanwhile, the best opportunities for spraying look likely on Monday and Tuesday.

Soils in the northwest and far southwest are currently close to saturation, with some poorly and moderately drained soils saturated, Met Éireann has said, while elsewhere, soil moisture deficits range between 5mm and 30mm.

With widespread showers and rain in the forecast, deficits are expected to decrease in all areas over the coming week, with some poorly drained soils becoming saturated or waterlogged, especially across Munster, Connacht and west Ulster later this week, Met Éireann said.
