The Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) young members association (YMA) continues to grow year after year, with much effort put into the calf finals held every July. The calf show is an interclub competition with the aim of encouraging the next generation of young breeders to participate and develop their skills.

Even more impressive is that the event is organised by young members themselves. Heading up the charge again this year was national YMA chairperson Doireann Mulhall. Much credit needs to go to her and her team for pulling off another very successful, well attended event which will no doubt help to foster young members in the areas of showmanship and breeding.

Judges

Judging this year’s showmanship and clipping was James Doherty, Shropshire, England. James has had numerous successes in the show ring including both champion black and white and champion red and white at the 2016 UK Dairy expo.

Serving as this year’s calf show judge was Jane Steel, Loch Lomond, Scotland. A well-known judge across the UK and Ireland, Jane is perhaps better known for her livestock photography which has brought her all over the world.
