At the start of the Macra year, the Rural Youth Committee came together and decided that youth employment and education would be a focus area for the committee.

Youth unemployment has been one of the greatest economic and social challenges facing our country since the recession began.

It is widely acknowledged that young people in Ireland have been hit by the financial and economic crisis, which in turn has led to a series of other issues, such as mental health problems, unemployment, rural isolation and emigration.

A lot of work and research has been undertaken by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) in the areas of youth employment and unemployment. By working with the NYCI and other agencies, the Rural Youth Committee, over the next few months, will formulate policy proposals in these areas.

These proposals will help to prevent young people from becoming disengaged and disconnected from education or employment, while also improving access to workplace opportunities to enhance overall skills and employability.

The aim of the committee will be to create an awareness among our members of available services, as well as helping members to up-skill and find work if currently unemployed.
