E-commerce giant Amazon has moved into the grocery retail space after it unveiled a new grab and go grocery store that has no tills or checkout lines. Instead, customers at this new Amazon Go grocery store will be able to scan their smartphone when entering the store, collect whatever items they need and simply leave the store with a final bill deducted from their credit card.

Amazon call this its “just walk out” technology, which automatically detects when products are taken from – or returned to – the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When customers are done shopping, they can just leave the store and shortly after the bill will be charged to their Amazon account.

Amazon says it has been developing this new shopping experience since 2012. At present the online retail giant has just a single store open, on the ground floor of its Seattle offices, which is open to employees only. However, Amazon plans to open the store to the public in early 2017 and will offer grocery staples such as bread, milk, cheese and chocolate, as well as on-site cooked, ready-to-eat meals.

Amazon has not specified whether it plans to roll out more of these new format grocery stores to a wider customer base.
