Gardaí investigating the theft of livestock in Co Westmeath three months ago said in a statement that they have arrested a man in his 30s in Co Donegal today (Thursday).

The arrest took place during a planned operation and the man is currently detained at Ballyshannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. The legislation allows gardaí to question a person for two periods of up to six hours each, to investigate offences punishable by prison sentences of five years or more.

Some 75 cattle and 25 sheep were stolen during the night between 24 and 25 June in Cornaher, between Kilbeggan and Tyrrellspass. Gardaí estimate the value of the animals to be in excess of €100,000.
