Sean and Finbarr Deasy with their 32-year-old cow Jenny.
The Angus cow, known as Jenny, was purchased by Sean at the end of February 1984, the year he got married, in the old mart in Skibbereen. He recalled it was a bit of an impulse buy as he'd had no trailer with him on the day and ended up bringing the calf home in the back of his hatch-back car. The cow had her last calf in February 2013 and is known to disappear to the furthest point of the paddock at the sight and sound of a cattle lorry entering the yard.
Previous Irish and world record holder
Bertha, or ‘Big Bertha’ as she was known, was a legendary Droimeann cow from Sneem in Co Kerry. She was bought as a calf by a farmer called Jerome O’Leary. She died on New Year's Eve, 1993, just three months shy of her 49th birthday. She also held the record for lifetime breeding, having produced 39 calves.
