Last Friday’s sale at Roscrea Mart saw another strong entry of over 600 head of cattle and cows on offer.

Newly appointed mart manager Michael Harte said that the trade has continued to be quite firm in recent weeks and numbers have held well up to now.

In terms of the trade, he outlined that feeders are still sourcing all short-keep and fleshed cattle at very strong prices.

Those over 600kg, where on offer, are selling mainly from €750 to €850 over the weight. Fleshed heifers are selling at similar prices to the equivalent bullock.

Another point of the trade is the continued strong demand for fleshed cows, with top-quality cows making up to €2,030 for 920kg (€2.21/kg). Other good-quality heavy cows made from €550 to €725 along with the weight.

Lighter store bullocks were available in fairly good numbers. These sold mainly from €450 to €700 over the weight, with all good-quality types making the higher end of the prices. He added that all good-quality light weanlings were a very strong trade also, with top-quality types around 350kg making over €1,000/head. The majority of those around 400kg sold from €950 to €1100/head.

Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and €10 to €15 to the seller.
