Prices saw jumps of 15-20 cent per kilo on recent sales with grass growth patterns changing and demand for summer grazing stock. There were 445 bullocks on offer and unlike recent weeks there was a larger selection of continental cross bullocks. Quality lots were in demand and outliers were especially sought after. Younger Friesians sold for up to €2/kg with the majority of beef cross stock floated between €2.15 and €2.47/kg.
Sample prices
There were 99 heifers on offer. All stock met steady demand with farmer buyers out in force for the heifers. Traditional breeds sold for similar money as recent weeks while the standout heifer was an outlier Charolais weighing 440kg that sold for €1000, or €2.27/kg.
Calfs
Calf numbers were similar to last week with 1230 calves sold. Yard staff said there was a noticeable rise in the number of Friesian heifer calves available this week. These were available from €150 to €270 with the top lot selling for €380.
Friesian bull calves sold from €80 to €170 for younger calves with stronger Friesian bull calves going for over €250. Traditional beef breeds were not as dominant as recent weeks and prices moved up slightly on the back of this. Hereford and Angus bulls made from €185 to €390 and Hereford and Angus heifer calves prices ranged from €165 to €345. Continental bull calves sold from €255 for smaller calves up to €420 while a selection of Simmental heifers sold for up to €475.
Cows
Dry cow numbers held at a similar level to recent weeks with 210 on offer. As ever, cow age and condition were the big influences on price. Prices were up €40 to €50 on recent sales.
