Retail chain Aldi has agreed to buy Ennistymon Mart, which is owned by Ennis-based Clare Marts. The mart closure is attracting local opposition.
Clare Marts is a 2,500-member co-op, with their headquarters in Ennis, and further mart branches in Kilrush, Kilfenora, Ennistymon and Scariff. It’s understood the board has been in discussions with Aldi over the proposed sale for some time. On Monday, they decided to accept an offer, understood to be in the region of €1.5m, for the premises.
Only a couple of local members of the 18-strong board opposed the sale. At present, Ennistymon Mart is used only sporadically at times of peak cattle sales, at present.
A meeting was scheduled for Wednesday evening, in the Falls Hotel, to organise a campaign to save the mart.
