The Chinese beef market may be a step closer after this week's inspection.

The team is made up of vets from China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ). They were due to meet officials at the Department of Agriculture on Wednesday.
Ireland had the BSE ban on exporting beef to China lifted last February and was the first EU country to do so.

A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture told the Irish Farmers Journal that there has been engagement for “some time with competent authorities in China in relation to accessing Irish beef to the Chinese market”.
The spokesperson said: “The process will involve a number of steps, including an inspection of Ireland’s animal and public health control systems by veterinarians from AQSIQ and this initial step is about to commence.”
