Funding is being increased to tackle illegal dumping due to “unprecedented demand”, the Department for Communications, Climate Action and Environment has said.
On Monday, Minister Naughten announced a second phase of the scheme was being opened with a further €650,000 being made available for applications from local authorities.

“Our riverways, mountainsides, towns and villages are to be used no longer as the dumping grounds for those amongst us who have no respect for their environment or their neighbours,” Minister Naughten said.
Under the initial phase of scheme, 85 projects were approved for funding from 111 applications. Projects that use surveillance and smart technology such as imagery from drones and satellites as well as CCTV cameras have been funded.
Clean-up and restorative projects for areas where dumping has taken place were also approved.
