David is a member of the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Scheme and an Origin Green member

Farmer Profile: David Johnson
Location: Penrose House, Redcross, Co. Wicklow
Family: Wife: Paula, Parents: Henry and Dorothy, Sons: Matthew, Scott & Christopher
System: Beef and Tillage
What had originally started out as a 60 acre dairy farm many years ago, has evolved into a 300 acre beef and tillage enterprise.
‘To ensure the long-term sustainability of our farm, we realised that we needed to become part of something that would guarantee the viability of our farm into the future.’ In a bid to achieve this, the Johnsons joined the Origin Green programme.
‘Being an Origin Green member means a huge amount to us. It reinforces the importance of sustainability. Sustainability means that I will still be here in 20 years. It’s about minding the farm, protecting the farm and handing it down to the next generation in better condition.
‘The main benefit of the scheme is that it eradicates inefficiency. If we all become more efficient, we’re improving the environment, while also getting the most for our money, it’s a no brainer really.’
‘A lot of people would be surprised by the fact that they are already carrying out many of the procedures required, especially if you are in the Quality Assurance scheme. There’s not a whole lot extra required. I would encourage all farmers to become Origin Green members. There really are no disadvantages.’
‘We now have an obligation to prove to the doubters that we are as good as we say we are. By being part of Origin Green, everything is measured, so we can prove to those that we want to sell to that we are in fact as good as we say we are. The idea of having such a recognisable stamp on the product is key. We have niche products here that we need to be pushing forward.’
‘My advice to farmers considering becoming members is to just do it. It’s easy’.
