Grant aid of up to €3,810 is available for the renewal or repair of the thatch roof of a house.

The grant is provided by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government and will cover two thirds of the approved costs, rising to 80% in the case of a medical card holder to a maximum of €6,350.

For houses located on certain specified islands off the west and south coasts of Ireland, a grant of €5,714 can be claimed, rising to a maximum of €8,252.30 for medical card holders on these islands.

Specifications

To be eligible for the scheme the house must be 10 or more years old and be structurally sound.

It must also be used as a normal place of residence after the works have been completed, with holiday homes ineligible for the scheme.

Work may not begin on the project until the house is inspected by the department.

The approved cost of the renewal or the repair of the thatch roof must exceed €952 to be eligible for grant aid.

The scheme can only be applied for once every seven years, however the length that a thatched roof will last can vary greatly depending on the quality of the work carried out with some thatch roofs lasting up to 10 years if carried out correctly.

More information on the scheme is available from the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government.
