Grocery prices are on the up, with the average basket now costing 2.7% more compared with this time last year.

The latest supermarket figures from Kantar Worldpanel show growth for the grocery market as a whole in the last 12 weeks, with sales increasing by 3.5%.

David Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel, said: "Areas where we have seen the most significant increases include vegetables, fruit and beer – all major categories for the retailers."

Dominant force

SuperValu remains the dominant grocery retailer for the 11th consecutive month, with sales growth of 3.2% and an additional 15,000 households shopping with the retailer in the past three months.

Tesco held on to its second place. However, its market share dropped to 21.8%.

Dunnes posted the strongest growth this quarter, with sales 5.8% ahead of last year. Dunnes now takes 21.2% of the market share.

Highest ever

Lidl achieved its highest-ever market share, reaching 11.9%, and got an extra 34,000 customers through the doors.

Meanwhile, Aldi's share increased slightly to 11.3% along with a significant improvement in sales growth.

David Berry added: "Aldi has recovered well since March this year when it saw sales growth dip below 1.0%. A healthy 4.4% increase in the past 12 weeks shows its performance is firmly back on track.”
