Milking heifers were met with what was described as a tough trade relative to other years at the Lisduff sale on Saturday. Despite this, there was a very high clearance with only a very small number of animals unsold.
The sale comprised mainly milking and in-calf heifers. This annual sale is normally the first female sale of the year and potential sellers come to test the temperature of the trade. There were buyers from all over the Republic, with little or no buyers from Northern Ireland or England.
John and Victor O’Sullivan and the team at Lisduff Holsteins held the sale of females at their farm at Whitechurch, Co Cork. The O'Sullivans have a long track record in the Holstein breed. John stepped down from his position as chair of the ICBF earlier this year and would be well known to many breeders and livestock farmers.
Bidding
Bidding opened at €1,400 for most of the milking heifers; the better heifers with better protein and cow families made €1,650 upwards. The tops made €2,450. Spring-calving heifers made better prices.
There were a number of in-calf heifers for sale also and lot 30, a Pellerat Dynamite daughter with an EBI of €130, sold for €4,100. She was bred in April this year to sexed female semen from Cogent Peak Alex. One calf from the Leslie family made €1,100. There were just three bulls for sale and they made €1,900, €2,100 and €1,500.
A full report from Saturday's sale will follow on www.farmersjournal.ie and in next week's edition of the Irish Farmers Journal.
