Total sales of fertiliser from 1 Octboer 2016 to the end of March this year show an increase in fertiliser use of 32%, to 749,834t and a 31% increase in the use of nitrogen (723,328t).

Sales of fertilisers containing phosphorus and potassium also increased by 26% over the same period. The total volume of fertilisers including phosphorous sold stood at 446,497t, while those containing potassium was 453,920t.

The Department has attributed the rise in sales to lower fertiliser prices towards the end of 2016 and in early 2017. This makes it unclear as to whether there will be an overall increase in annual sales volumes.
