The worldwide improvement of consumption of butter hit Canada during the festive season. Demand for butter in that country led to a shortage of supplies during the Christmas period.

Canadian Dairy Commission, which is in charge of keeping the Canadian dairy industry in balance, has been blamed for the recent shortfall.

In one of the last countries with a controlled milk production quota system, authorities there granted the Canadian Dairy Commission a permit to import 4,000t of butter from Ireland, New Zealand, Belgium and Uruguay to help fill the deficiency.

Even though the milk quota for the country was increased by 4.8% in 2014, most of the stockpiles were exhausted by September.

The special import permit, which waived the 300% import duty on butter, came into effect on 12 November 2015 and lasted until 31 December 2015.
