The farm is located on the Tipperary-Cork border at Croughmore Lower. Sean is the fourth generation Moher to farm here. Sean’s great grandmother bought the farm for £389 from Countess Anna Kingston.

Last year, the Moher business milked 79 cows and delivered 457,000 litres of milk to Dairygold Co-op in a spring-calving production system (1,300 kg MS/ha). Sean has help from his wife Treasa and you can see her influence and Sean’s engineering and quality control background in the documents printed and laminated in the dairy.

Just inside the door of the dairy is a large whiteboard and on it are the important notes that help make better decisions. The latest farm grass cover details are pinned to the board, the milking process diagram for those doing relief milking, a milk production summary chart and a map of the farm paddocks etc. At the bottom of the board is a list of what needs to improve and a list of what went well. Everything to do with the washing routine in the 14-unit parlour is documented and laminated on the wall. There is an organisation and discipline about the Moher farm and a coolness about Sean that seems to make it run in a smooth, no-panic way. The organisation in the farm workshop would put most hardware shops to shame. Everything has a place.

The farmyard has evolved as cow numbers have grown so old sheds have been converted and new tanks built. Everything was clean and functional – there was no fancy paint work but cleanliness and organisation stood out.

The Mohers farm a total of 61ha but there are only 28ha available for grazing around the parlour. This year, 89 cows are being milked.

Sean is a member of the Ballygiblin Discussion Group.
