Winter planting progressed quite well in the past week with fields in good condition. Some crops are already well established, with many others now coming through.

While conditions are good for establishment, slugs have been very active in recent weeks and crows could become a problem soon if temperatures fall dramatically. Slugs have already destroyed a number of winter rape crops. Firm and well-rolled seedbeds form a good basis for cultural control to reduce movement and feeding activity.

This is very important in all crops and this includes catch crops that may only be planted now. If you are expecting a problem, apply slug pellets such as Axcela or Metarex before the crop emerges when there is only one source of food.
