Monday’s general cattle sale at Carlow Mart saw another good entry of cattle on offer. Numbers would normally be slightly higher, but with the special show and sale taking place next week, this would have distracted slightly from Monday’s sale.

There was a strong trade for all good-quality types, in particular forward cattle. Heavy bullocks over 600kg sold mainly from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg, mostly for heavy Hereford and Friesians. Those from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.30/kg for continentals and from €1.90/kg to €2.00/kg for Herefords.

Where quality light store bullocks were on offer, prices ranged from €2.10/kg to €2.45/kg, with plain Friesians making from €1.50/kg to €1.70/kg and up to €2.10/kg for Angus and Herefords. Continental heifers from 450kg to 500kg sold mainly from €1.80/kg to €2.25/kg, with heavier types selling from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg.

Light heifers from 300kg to 400kg were met with strong demand and prices ranged from €2.20/kg to €2.60/kg, with better-quality types making the higher prices on a per-kilo basis. Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and €9 to €17 to the seller depending on sale value.

Frieisan calves sold from €95 for young types up to €290 for top-quality types. Prices averaged at €130 to €150/head.

Angus calves sold from €195 to €300, with continentals making from €400 to €500. Friesian feeding cows sold mainly from €1.20/kg to €1.45/kg, with continental feeding types making from €1.50/kg to €1.75/kg. However, the numbers on offer were small.
