Matt Dempsey reports on an alternative view within the climate change debate. Setting aside the argument around whether or not climate change is happening, of more importance to Irish farming is the contributing factors. There are question marks being raised over the role of methane in global warming – Prof Lindzen is not alone in his view. Given its potential impact on the national cattle herd and the Irish economy, we cannot afford to ignore this viewpoint. Research alliances into the area with like-minded countries such as New Zealand should be explored. The focus should not be to dismiss climate change but ensure that the science on which policy decisions are made is fully informed with the most up-to-date information. Both sides of this argument should see the benefits of a science-based debate.
