Calf sales have slowed considerably in recent weeks. Last week, the ICBF database recorded just 713 calf sales through marts. Again, the majority of those on offer were Angus-bred calves, with 150 bulls and approximately 120 heifers on offer.

The average price paid for bulls last week was €190/head, with heifer prices running approximately €20/head behind this. The second-highest supply on offer were Hereford calves, with approximately 120 bulls and heifer sales recorded. Like previous weeks, Hereford bull and heifers prices are running well above the equivalent aged Angus, with prices averaging €245/head for bulls and €205/head for heifers. At this stage of the year, most buyers are demanding older calves. Friesian bulls are still coming to the fore and prices are steady at €110 to €125/head.

Cull cow numbers holding

The past few weeks have seen the number of cull cows on offer hold steady at many marts around the country.

While the number of Friesian cows on offer remains relatively low, suckler culls are holding well.

In terms of prices, fleshed cows were holding firm up to the weekend, backed by solid factory prices.

However, attempts by factories to pull prices is likely to weaken positivity at the ringside.

Feeding cows have seen prices slip slightly in recent weeks, but mainly for plainer and older types.

Feeding continentals are selling mainly from €1.60/kg to €1.80/kg, depending on age and quality.

Where poor-quality types are on offer, prices of €150 to €250 over the weight are common.
