Calf numbers are low but increasing. With relatively few sales taking place in the past week, the normal throughput of calves has not really started yet, but where good-quality calves are on offer, prices are starting quite high. Last year, we saw a stronger focus from buyers on calf quality as they moved towards sourcing better-quality and older calves. So far this year, the trend is similar. Where young Frieisan calves are on offer, about two to three weeks of age, they are selling at prices of €75 to €100/head. Where slightly better-quality Friesians are on offer, prices of €120 to €160/head are more common. The number of continental calves on offer is very low and prices are variable. Angus calf numbers are low, but are selling mainly from €160 to €180/head for heifers, and from €180 to €210/head for bull calves. Calf quality and age are the price drivers.
