As part of the National Development Plan (NDF), 29 plans have been proposed under new capital works/flood relief schemes as part of the Flood Risk Management Plan, which will receive €940m in funding over the lifetime of the NDF, with another €430m set aside for projects between 2016 and 2021.
Areas will have to be prioritised before they can be approved for funding and this will be applied on a regional basis.
“The important thing now is that the Government is recognising that the hardship and suffering by people from flood events must be tackled with a greater sense of urgency, by ramping up investment in the area." said Minister of State for the OPW, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran.
Some of the flood relief projects are estimated to cost up to €15m each, but smaller schemes will also be included in the relief measures.

In addition, €430m has been allocated to help develop flood relief infrastructure between 2016 and 2021, for communities near rivers and coastal regions prone to flooding.
