While it is still only early in the season, there have been a number of in-calf suckler heifers on offer in the past few weeks.
The trade is quite steady, with age, size and quality the main factors influencing prices.

Older 28- to 30-month heifers close to calving are selling mainly from €1,500 to €1,800, with very fancy heifers making over €2,000 on occasion.
Buyers are eager for accurate data on calving date and the sire used, with calving ease also an important factor.
Other farmers are tending to source calved heifers and cows rather than in-calf heifers in order to avoid issues around calving. Again, size and shape of cows is a major factor affecting prices, with well-sized heifers with calves at foot selling from €1,600 to €1,800.
