Weather and money woes continue to hamper the pedigree beef bull trade, with the average price at the Hereford premier in Tullamore on Saturday taking a hit.
While the clearance rate did increase from 30% to 50%, the average dropped by over €200 to level at €3,122.
Leading the sale was the first prize winning Cill Cormaic Prince 2 from David Larkin, Birr, Co Offaly.
His October 2016-born bull was sired by Black Water Lad while the dam was homebred Cill Cormaic Lavinia. With five stars on the terminal index, he sold for €5,000 to Nelson McCrabbe.
Championship
The day’s championship was awarded to Airhill Oconaill, a bull brought out by JJ Farrell, Longford. Again October 2016-born, this one is out of Ardmulchan Himalagan. Having failed to meet his reserve in the ring, he was sold outside for €4,250 to John Bergin.
A full report will appear in next week’s Irish Farmers Journal.
