The number of calves on offer at marts continues to decline. Angus heifer calves have held firm, and are selling at €120 to €140/head for average-quality types while stronger calves are making up to €170/hd in some areas.
Angus bulls are selling from €160 to €180/hd with the number on offer back a little on last week. Hereford heifers are selling for about €50/hd more than the equivalent Angus, while Hereford bulls are making from €210/hd to €230/hd for average-quality types, back by €70 to €90/hd on the same week last year. Friesian bull calf prices are holding firm with prices averaging from €80 to €90/hd. Light and young calves continue to make from €60 to €80, while strong farmers-type calves are making from €120 to €140/head. Exporter activity is strong, with a good deal of demand for both Angus and Friesian calves.
