An emergency water supply has been established for farmers and non-domestic water users in Granard, Co Longford.

As maintenance and repair work continues to affect water supply in the area, Irish Water has taken the precaution of setting up a water facility at the back of Granard Garda Station as drought conditions persist.

“This temporary facility is intended for farmers and other business users in the Granardkill area who are impacted by the current water supply difficulty,” a spokesperson for Irish Water told the Irish Farmers Journal.

The water standpipe facility will be manned twice daily from in the mornings from 11am to 12pm and evenings 8pm to 9pm.

Met Éireann has issued a seven-day weather warning for the country, with drought or drought-like conditions expected to remain in place until Friday 6 July.

Water is of critical importance to livestock during this heatwave, but to-date farmers in the Granard area have not reported a major need for the facility.

Farmers who fear they are running low on water can contact Irish Water's 24-hour helpline at: 1850 278 278.
