Irish Water has made available a water tanker for farmers in Doonane, Co Laois from Monday 2 July.

The area is suffering from ongoing water issues, due to planned nightly water outages from 10pm to 6am to allow treated water levels in Wolfhill Reservoir to recover. The outages will impact roughly 1,500 people in the area.

An additional tanker will be available tomorrow morning for supply for farm animals only.

“Four static water tankers are in place throughout the work for public use. An additional tanker will be available tomorrow morning for supply for farm animals only,” Irish Water said in a statement.

Francie Gorman, the IFA county chair for Laois told the Irish Farmers Journal, that while water was a concern in the area, it wasn’t close to reaching crisis point.

However, Gorman urged farmers and people in the rural community to conserve water where possible.

A water facility has also been provided for farmers in Granard, Co Longford, where approximately 300 people have been affected by water supply issues due to maintenance works.

It’s another precautionary measure taken by Irish Water, as there has been a low-take up of the water facility among farmers in the area.

Across Ireland, Irish Water is urging communities to conserve water where possible as drought conditions are likely to continue into the coming week.

“We now have 39 water supplies under night-time water restrictions and over 100 water supplies at risk due to high consumption,” Irish Water stated.

“We are tankering water from larger schemes to top up reservoirs where levels are falling.”
