Right across the country farmers are praying for the heavens to open. While we are waiting for such requests to be registered, unfortunately the one thing we can’t change is the weather.

As the old saying goes, ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” – and some who didn’t plan a trip this year will be looking to pack up the car, put down the windows and head off around the country, enjoying the same temperatures as Spain, without the hassle or cost of an overseas trip. For anyone planning a ‘staycation’, Irish Country Living has some spots in mind.

Kerry

The Kingdom is always a staple on lists of places to holiday in Ireland and it’s pretty self-explanatory why; stunning scenery, loads to do and plenty of craic. The only problem is, where exactly does one go in this vast county? Tried and tested, a couple of days in Killarney followed by a trip to Dingle is a fool-proof option. In Killarney you have that big town feel, while also getting to see the lakes, Black Valley, Torc Waterfall and all the rest. Dingle offers the perfect complement to this, with its seaside atmosphere and plethora of well-known attractions.

Wicklow

Everyone knows that Wicklow is a beautiful county, but more importantly there are tons of things to do while taking in the views. The Bray to Greystones walk is a must for anyone visiting the Garden County. This coastal trek is about 7km between the two towns, and many opt to stop for food at the finish before taking the Dart back. Glendalough needs no introduction, bringing our history books to life, and anyone into mountain climbing might want to consider visiting Sugarloaf.

Derry

With its captivating story, famous walls and many museums, if it’s cultural heritage you are looking for then Derry city is the place for you. There are many tours on offer in Derry and they’re a great way to get an understanding of the place.

A good, affordable option is a walking tour, with prices starting from £4 at Derry City Tours. Both the Free Derry Museum and the Guild Hall are two of the most popular cultural attractions.

The Free Derry Museum costs £4 for an adult and entry to the Guild Hall is free. To see more of the Derry countryside pay a visit to Mussenden Temple in Castlerock, a historic monument looking out on the Atlantic Ocean.
