In a move termed as a “potential death knell for this important project” by the IFA, Kerry County Council has lodged a planning application for a 32km greenway.
Up to 197 landowners will be affected by compulsory purchase orders (CPOs), which the IFA believes is unacceptable.

Vehement opposition to the use of CPOs has been mounted by local farmers and farm organisations, with over 100 people protesting outside Kerry County Council in July.
Landowners continue to demonstrate a genuine willingness to engage
“Kerry County Council’s actions are excessive and unnecessary,” IFA national environment chair Thomas Cooney said.
“Landowners continue to demonstrate a genuine willingness to engage and provide alternative routes on their holdings, which work for their farm businesses and this recreational route. After all, CPOs are not even mentioned in the national greenways strategy.
“Minister Ross and Minister Griffin need to take control of the national development of greenways if they are to happen and make the positive impact on the rural economy that they can be.”
