The Agri Careers Expo is back this coming February. Previously the Agri Careers Fair, the event will take place on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2019. The build-up is already underway for what is expected to be one of the biggest career events in the agricultural industry.

In 2017, over 1,100 jobs were up for grabs at the event across a number of agri fields and it is expected to be no different in February. Over the next four months, Irish Country Living will profile the various individuals who will speak on the day, as well as reviewing the nine different themed panels that will take place on our main stage.

Coming up to the event, we will be unveiling some of the key-note speakers participating in the panel discussions. These speakers are some of agriculture’s biggest names and influencers. They will discuss their career paths and the decisions that led them to the positions they hold today.

In total there will be over 30 speakers on our main stage over the course of the day, as well as numerous other speakers on our three side stages. These side stages will include the following:

  • A careers hub: This stage will provide people with practical tips such as how to boost your CV and how to maximise your social media platform.
  • An agri-hub: This panel will see technical experts from the Irish Farmers Journal discuss various topics across beef, tillage and dairy sector. It will also allow for interaction and questions from the audience.
  • A school zone: This hub will provide informative talks for school-goers about various agricultural courses and how to maximise your study guides. It will provide a fun relief from the mania of the main hall. The number of level eight agricultural courses has increased in recent years, with Letterkenny IT beginning its level eight course in 2017, while UCC announced its course will start next September. This hub will offer students a real flavour of what’s out there.
  • The 2016 and 2017 events attracted over 15,000 people and over 100 exhibitors, offering a great opportunity for both companies and individuals to network under one roof.

    The third instalment

This is the third instalment of the expo since its inception in 2016. The 2016 and 2017 events attracted over 15,000 people and over 100 exhibitors, offering a great opportunity for both companies and individuals to network under one roof.

For companies wishing to recruit, the expo is a wonderful chance to speak with the prospective employee willing to apply, including graduate and career changer.

Company feedback from the 2017 event was positive, with numerous people stating that it was a wonderful networking event. It also offers companies the chance to build up CVs for future recruitment needs.

For individuals, the aim of the expo is simple: to create a format whereby people can communicate with companies in the industry, either finding a job or building contacts within the sector. The variety of talks on the day will also allow people to hear from some of the industry’s top names.

    The importance of the expo

The importance of an event like the expo to the Irish agri-food sector cannot be underestimated. The success of every sector is dependent on its ability to attract and retain new talent and Irish agriculture is no different.

If we are to harvest the opportunities that will undoubtedly present themselves in the years ahead, we must be in a position to compete in an employment market that is now full of opportunities. While there is no doubt that the sector can compete in this space, it is important that the career diversity that the agricultural sector can offer across all skill levels is properly communicated. The 2019 Agri Careers Expo aims to do this.

    Employment across the sector

With one in eight jobs in Ireland in the agri-food sector, agriculture represents a major source of employment across rural and urban Ireland.

Speaking on the event, Irish Country Living editor Amii McKeever explained: “As an ag science graduate who has worked in a number of different roles in the sector over the last 15 years, I know that the agri-food industry offers fantastic opportunities to not only work and learn but to progress.”

When speaking at the last event in 2017, Irish Farmers Journal editor and CEO Justin McCarthy described the sector as an industry for everyone, regardless of educational status or background.

“Some of the CEOs of these companies now employing over 5,000 people started on the floor and have worked their way up to the top and I think that’s the great opportunity that agriculture actually offers,” he said.
