Listen to "Criminals break into farm six times" on Spreaker.

“I’ve been the victim of crime six times. The last time, we had just had a €2,500 security fence installed and it didn’t make a bit of difference.

“I’ve learned that no amount of steel or padlocks will keep these boys out if they’re determined to get in.

“Another time they broke in, they beat one guard dog to death and the other had to be put down.

“In my opinion, the stuff they’re selling is going abroad.”

Finbar O’Connell, Macroom, Co Cork

“There were five people with 14 dogs in the fields around us last Sunday. There was a transit van with no tax or insurance driving around behind the gang that was walking across mine and my neighbour’s land.

“We called the gardaí and by the time the transit van came back around the road the gardaí had arrived but they just let the van go – even though we’d reported that it didn’t have any tax or insurance. I felt the gardaí were powerless.”

Conor Slattery Nenagh, Co Tipperary

“I’ve challenged these lads and they’ve laughed at me.

“I’ve called the gardaí and in fairness they’ve come out but the lads come out the next day with their dogs.

“It seems like they know the loopholes in the law and know how to use them. The criminal seems to have more say and more sympathy than the farmer. These people are only laughing at us and even if they’re arrested they’re able to use the system.”
