Holiday campsites are the most popular choice farm future farm diversification according to an NFU Mutual survey. The survey details that over 25% of farmers plan to diversify their business with tourist accommodation and renewables.
Respondents to the survey stated that 94% of established diversification schemes were successful with non-farming ventures typically accounting for 27% of income.
Currently the most common diversification on Scottish farms is renewable energy (34%), followed by property letting (17%) and holiday accommodation (8.5%).

Boosting farm income was the main reason for diversifying – quoted by 62% of farmers surveyed across the UK. Other reasons included: providing a business opportunity for a partner or other family member (26%), utilising redundant farm buildings or unproductive land (20%), and providing a short-term income (9%).
