A planning application for a biogas plant in Gort capable of treating 95,000t of organic material each year has been withdrawn, according to documents filed with Galway County Council. The decision by developer Sustainable Bio-Energy Ltd follows opposition from a number of local residents, with 144 observations submitted to the council and a petition campaign run by the local Gort Biogas Concern Group.
Sustainable Bio-Energy is part of Karol McElhinney’s Co Donegal-based Glenmore group of companies, which has also recently withdrawn a planning application for the extension of its existing biogas plant in Ballybofey, to further refine gas and fertiliser on site.
One week earlier, as previously reported, the group had withdrawn a third planning application for the full redevelopment of the yard at An Grianán, Ireland’s largest organic dairy farm in Co Donegal. The companies may re-introduce altered planning applications for those sites at any point.
