The rural bus service “Local Link” will be extended for three months, Minister for Transport Shane Ross has announced.

The pilot scheme will be extended until 31 March. It usually runs on Friday and Saturday and runs from 6pm to 11pm.

“Tackling rural isolation and providing the means for people to meet, socialise and attend events is extremely important,” Minister Ross said.

This very useful service

“I would encourage people to use their Local Links as much as possible so we can continue to provide, and hopefully increase, this very useful service.”

Despite the minister’s confidence in the scheme, it has been criticised by a number of rural TDs who believe it does not go far enough to help people in rural areas combat rural isolation.

However, Minister Ross said that demand for the scheme has meant that 65 additional services have been introduced across 26 counties since last summer.
