UFU president and sheep farmer Ivor Ferguson has warned that half of Northern Ireland's sheep farmers could go out of business in case of a no-deal Brexit.

Speaking on RTE's Drivetime Ferguson said: "50% of our [Northern Ireland's] lambs go south. If they were faced with a £40/hd tariff, this means that 50% of our sheep farmers would be out of business. We couldn't do it,"

Who will be paying the money?

While there has been a lot of talk this week about the potential for a hard border if the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, Ferguson said the nature and location of the resulting checks were not the main problem.

"Our main concern is the tariffs," he said. "I’m convinced they’ll find ways of doing the checks, but who will be paying the money?"

Asked for his message to politicians, Ferguson said he didn't have any and that farmers were just "very disappointed that we don’t have an assembly in Northern Ireland to represent us".
