Monaghan vet Brendan Smyth has called on dog owners to take extra care to keep their dogs under control as lambing continues on farms.

In a notice to members of the public, he highlights that the local dog warden received reports of two separate incidences where sheep were killed by dogs last week.

According to the reports, eight sheep were killed by dogs in Knockatallon and two sheep were attacked near Ballybay.

“These attacks cause great cruelty to sheep and lambs,” the notice reads.

In addition, Smyth points out that any type of dog, big or small can attack sheep.

Reports of attacks on sheep have been increasing as lambing continues and dog owners are reminded that all dogs must now be microchipped.
