In a new bill aimed at tackling the illegal use of quad bikes and scramblers in public areas, Fianna Fáil has proposed that a national register be created for the vehicles.

The bill sets out to address the number of serious collisions involving mechanically propelled vehicles that can cause life threatening injuries.

However, if a national register was to be created, farmers would also be obliged to comply with new rules.

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Dublin John Lahart and spokesperson on urban affairs John Curran introduced the party’s bill in Dáil Éireann this week.

“We will deal with the fact that these vehicles are not owner registered by introducing a National Vehicle Register,” Curran said.

The Road Traffic(All Terrain Vehicle and Scrambler Motor-cycle) (Amendment) bill 2019 states: “the Minister shall, within six months of the enactment of this Act, and after consultation with the Minister for Finance, issue a report on the establishment of a database of all All Terrain Vehicles in the State, both new and second hand, with a view to ensuring all such vehicles be registered on the National Vehicle Driver File.”
