There was 1,854,000t of the three main cereals (wheat, oats and barley) produced in Ireland in 2018, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This is 539,000t less than 2017 and represents a 23% fall in production.
The decrease is being attributed to decreases in yields across all three main cereals, including a decrease of 198,000t in the production of spring barley. The area of spring barley sown increased by 10.6% to 127,400ha but the yield dropped by 29% to 5.6t/ha.
Wheat production was down by 25.7% (-175,000t). The area sown decreased by 9,100 hectares (-13.5%), the yield decreased by 14.0% to 8.7t/ha.
An unknown quantity of wheat and barley was not harvested because it was saved as whole crop last year.
Oat production was down by 40% (-83,000t). The area sown decreased by 6,700 hectares (-27.3%) and the yield decreased by 18% to 6.9t/ha.
Potato yield decreased by 26.1% from 44.9t/ha in 2017 to 33.2t/ha in 2018, resulting in a fall in production of 139,000t (-33.8%) to 273,000t.
Beans and peas production was down by 74.8% (-67,000t). The area sown decreased by 5,200 hectares (-38.0%) and the yield decreased by 59.4%.
