Just over a year ago there were questions raised around the parentage of the Limousin AI bull, Ballinloan Jaegerbomb.

The 24,000gns bull had both a DNA test and genomic sample taken, but it turned out the dam wasn’t that of what was stated on the pedigree cert.

A letter was then issued by the UK Limousin Society to halt the use and purchase of semen of the bull until the matter was resolved.

Later that week, the actual dam was identified as Ballinloan Geneva and Ballinloan Jaegerbomb regained his pedigree status.

It is also understood that initial purchaser of Ballinloan Jaegerbomb, Ian Handley, has been informed his bull, Gunnerfleet Oswald, will not be accepted into this weekend's premier society sale in Carlisle

Now, one year on, a source has told the Irish Farmers Journal that progeny from the bull now are to be barred from all society sales in the UK following a special council meeting.

It is also understood that initial purchaser of Ballinloan Jaegerbomb, Ian Handley, has been informed his bull, Gunnerfleet Oswald, will not be accepted into this weekend's premier society sale in Carlisle due to he being a son of Ballinloan Jaegerbomb.

Progeny

This will come as shock to many breeders who have progeny sired by Jaegerbomb, or are expecting progeny in the coming nine months. In total 13 calves have been registered on the Irish database to date with a further 226 in the UK.

These numbers include some pedigree bulls which have already been sold on for breeding, with some going to pedigree herds. At the May 2018 Carlisle Premier Society Sale , just two months after the last questioning of the bulls parentage, five Jaegerbomb sons from the Gunnerfleet herd sold for an average price of £11,500, with a top of 18,000gns.

It is very concerning if the pedigree of this animal has been brought into disrepute again. The UK Limousin Society knew about the issue over 12 months ago and failed to fully rectify it. The debate could potentially stand to cost breeders millions in lost revenue for years to come.
