Cork farmer Edward Donovan has been crowned overall winner of the 2018 Dairygold milk quality awards.
He is a new entrant to farming, having started out in 2014.
He currently milks 203 cows from a 190ac grazing platform.
Sustainability award
For the first year, Dairygold also presented a sustainability award, which went to Pat Cronin, who was also awarded mid-Cork regional winner.
Dairygold chair John O’Gorman said: “Edward has shown how someone relatively new to the industry can use best practise to produce the best results from his herd.
“The quality of our milk is what makes us successful and these awards are just another way of emphasising that message to our customers, suppliers and across our organisation.”
Milk solids
Dairygold chief executive Jim Woulfe added his congratulations and said that the average milk solids for Dairygold had been increasing incrementally ever since the introduction of A+B-c milk price payment system in 2008, that rewarded higher milk solids.
“The average Dairygold milk supplier is now delivering milk with 3.53% protein and 4.17% fat.
"At those solids, a farmer can earn 4.3c/l more than a farmer delivering milk with the national average fat and protein,” Woulfe said.
The awards were judged by two independent judges; Dr Karina Pierce of University College Dublin and Teagasc dairy specialist Don Crowley.
